Test Code PT PT (Prothrombin Time) and INR, Blood

Important Note

Specimen must arrive within 24 hours of collection at room temperature                                  (Do not refrigerate).

If Prothrombin Time (PT) is ordered with Activated Partial Thromboplastin Time (aPTT) , the specimen must arrive within 8 hours of collection at room temperature.  If the patient in on heparin monitoring therapy, call the lab at 201-447-8232 #2 for a STAT pickup. 

Specimen Requirements

Container/Tube: Light blue-top (3.2% sodium citrate) tube

Specimen Volume: Full 4.5-mL tube of whole blood

Collection Instructions: Immediately invert tube and mix gently 8 times. Clotted blood is not acceptable. Avoid hemolysis.

Note: Label specimen appropriately.
