Test Code ACCASA VerifyNow® Aspirin Assay, Blood
Specimen Requirements
VerifyNow P2Y12 and Aspirin Assay
Collection Instructions
This protocol is used to monitor platelet inhibition from Plavix (clopidogrel) and Aspirin Therapy.
Call extension 111- 2172 Ridgewood or 612-4769 Paramus for the special tube that is required for testing.
SAMPLE COLLECTION, HANDLING AND PRECAUTIONS.
- If drawing blood for a CBC at the same time as sample collection for
VerifyNow P2Y12 Assay, fill the CBC tube last.
A. Instructions for Sample Collection from Indwelling Venous Catheters:
Call the lab for the special collection tube.
- Whole blood samples that are obtained from an indwelling catheter should be collected after sufficient discard (approximately 5 mL) has been drawn to clear the line. Ensure the indwelling catheter is free of clots. Collect enough blood for 2 Greiner blue top tubes. Each tube must contain 2MLs of blood.
- Gently invert the sample tube at least 5 times to ensure complete mixing of the contents.
- The blood should be immediately hand carried to the laboratory. The time the specimen was drawn MUST be indicated on the patient’s label. Testing is time and temperature dependent.
B. Instructions for Peripheral Samples:
Call the lab for the special collection tube.
- Whole blood may be collected from venous sites using a 21gauge or larger needle in an appropriate blood collection tube. Blood samples should be obtained from an extremity free of peripheral venous infusions.
- Collect a discard tube first (approximately 2 mL).
- Do not freeze or refrigerate samples.
- Collection of the blood sample should be performed with care to avoid hemolysis or contamination by tissue factors. Traumatic draws are unacceptable.
- Always ensure collection tubes are filled to the indicated fill volumes.

Methodology
The VerifyNow® Aspirin Assay is a qualitative assay to aid in the detection of platelet dysfunction, due to aspirin ingestion, in citrated whole blood.
Pre-Surgical Screen: Prior to surgery, the aspirin assay can aid in guiding clinical decision whether to discontinue aspirin therapy (when increased risk of perioperative bleeding from Plavix®), or to remain on aspirin to improve graft patency.
